What is “Peak Demand”?
Although customers pay one flat rate for electricity, the real price per kilowatt hour that Belmont Light pays for energy fluctuates based on demand and supply. This means that at certain times of day there is a premium to consume energy, operating much like surge pricing when you call a rideshare service.
When demand for electricity is at its peak, Belmont Light must pay more for the energy it procures, which typically comes from “dirtier” fossil fuel generators. Reducing your use during key times keeps costs stable and allows Belmont Light to tap into cleaner sources of energy.
What is a “Demand Response Event”?
By enrolling your home devices in the Peak Reduction Rewards Program, you agree to let Belmont Light make brief, limited adjustments to your use during times of peak electric demand. An “demand response event” is the term used to describe the time period when a device is being adjusted.
Belmont Light will notify you when an event is expected. You always have ultimate control over your devices, and can always opt-out of participating in an event.
How do I receive my incentive?
Once your participation is approved, you will receive the $25 credit sign-on on your next bill.
You can earn quarterly bill credits for continued participation. You must participate in at least three-quarters of the events called each month to receive this credit. You will receive $10/month for an EV charger and $5/month per device for other connected devices.
Can I enroll a device that’s not wi-fi enabled?
Unfortunately, no. In order for Belmont Light to make small adjustments to the device demand, the device needs to be connected to the internet.
You must maintain an internet connection for your device at all times. If connectivity is lost, Belmont Light will notify you and you will have 30 days to restore the connection. If you do not resolve the issue in this time frame, your device will be removed from the program. You will begin to receive credits again once the device is reconnected and you have notified Belmont Light of the reconnection by email or other method.
